The Project “Follow the Women” is a cycle ride of women from
all over the world who stand in favour of peace and the rights of women. The
idea of the project was put forward by five women from England, Cyprus, Sweden,
Jordan and Euskadi as a means of raising awareness about the serious conflict
in the Middle East countries where women have a crucial role as peace agents
even though overshadowed by the prominence of the armed struggle.
Its first edition in 2004 brought together 270 women from many different
countries like: Palestine, Iraq, Great Britain, United States, Spain, etc. who
cycled over 300 kilometres through Lebanon, Syria and Jordan in order to spread
their message. During the second edition of the ride the women managed to enter
Palestine and in this way made even clearer their message in favour of peace
and conflict resolution through dialogue and understanding between cultures.
There were Catalan participants in both rides. They had an opportunity to learn
first-hand about the reality of these countries at war, and confront with the
real evidence and not the information, very often manipulated, that we are
bombarded with by the Media.
Nexes believe strongly in dialogue and understanding between communities, trust
in the active role of people in conflict resolution and that is why we
coordinate this project in Catalonia.
Next edition: 2007
Place: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine
